On or about 4th October 2004 a solution suspected to contain cyanide was leaked from a newly constructed tailing dam on the mining concession of Bogoso Gold Ltd in the Wassa West District.
This leakage spilled into a number of water bodies and in the process killed fishes and other life forms in the rivers.
The Plaintiffs who are residents of Dumasi and depended on these water bodies for drinking water and other household uses unknowingly drunk the water and consumed some of the dead fish from the rivers.
This resulted in serious health implication for the villagers such as stomach aches, general body weakness and diarrhea. Some livestock also died as a result.
CEPIL instituted an action on behalf of the affected community members in the High Court, Tarkwa.
